Heart of Viana - Joana Vasconcelos

Independent Heart "Golden" - Artist Joana Vasconcelos

It is presented in the form of an enormous Heart of Viana, an iconic piece of Portuguese Filigree, patiently filled with yellow plastic cutlery.

Suspended from the axis, the work performs a circular rotating movement, evocative of the cycles of life and the eternal return, accompanied by the sound of three expressive fados, Estranha Forma de Vida , Gaivota and Maldição , performed by Amália Rodrigues, a diva of Portuguese music from the second half of the 20th century.

By multiplying the use of common plastic cutlery to the point of abstracting its original form, to convert it into a work of art inspired by a valuable piece of filigree, the initial references appear transfigured by new suggested social and artistic schemes, thus exposing the artificiality of the boundaries drawn between luxury and banality.

The title of the piece is precisely taken from one of the verses of the first fado, written by Alfredo Duarte (Marceneiro) and Amália Rodrigues, whose lyrics evoke the conflict between emotion and reason.

Coração Independente Dourado presents itself as a powerful and emotional sound and kinetic installation dedicated to love, one of the recurring themes in fado lyrics.
